INHARESMO

Induktiv efterhärdning av snabbhärdande komposit för eliminering av restspänningar och formförändringar

The idea of the project

The present project will study feasibility of a novel approach for post-curing of modern fast-cure composites with the aim to potentially remove residual stresses and shape distortions. Unlike the presently used commercial methods, the proposed idea of induction post-curing explores the electromagnetic properties of carbon fiber composites and produces more controlled internal volumetric heating. The research question is whether this novel technique can lead to better mechanical properties of composites by potentially removing the residual stresses and shape distortions. A continuation research project could start on a higher TRL level, where a more detailed parametric analysis and validation of different materials could be performed. Automotive, aeronautical, sports and other industries could have significant benefits from such technology for cost-efficient production of optimized lightweight composite parts.

Project Contribution to the LIGHTer Program Goals

The present feasibility project will address the following themes of the LIGHTer Lightweight agenda:

- Lighter with shorter development time: simulation models for induction post-curing and resulting mechanical properties will be developed within the project allowing to optimize components and minimize the amount of necessary physical prototyping.

- Lighter with improved properties and innovative solutions: the induction post-curing improves the material properties through increased cross-linking of polymeric chains, eliminating the residual stresses and shape distortions.

The proposed novel post-curing can even be integrated within the existing production lines for composites, hence, the idea has a high potential for being industrially implemented within 5 years after the end of the feasibility study project. The present project will also demonstrate collaboration between academia, SME and a large company, developing the competence in lightweight technologies within the whole value chain.
